Integrated Management Systems

Course Profile
Optional versions for 2 day duration or 3 day duration

Aims
This course is designed to provide managers and integrated management system auditors with:
•    Understanding of integrated management systems
•    Awareness of PAS 99:2006 Integrated Management
•    Awareness of the structure and requirements of relevant standards
•    Knowledge of process auditing methods
•    Ability to conduct and report audits of the IMS (integrated quality, environmental and health & safety and other management systems)

Integrated Management Systems
Many organisations have implemented or are considering adopting management system standards and specifications. In some cases these are operated as separate systems although many organisations have recognised that this can result in duplication, complexity and unnecessary cost.
By identifying the common elements that apply in each applicable system/standard, increasing numbers of organisations are developing an integrated management system (IMS) that offers a unified approach to management of risk, performance improvement and compliance with legal, regulatory and customer requirements.

An integrated management system can bring together common requirements of widely used standards and specifications including:
•    ISO 9001 Quality
•    ISO 14001 Environment
•    BS OHSAS 18001 Occupational Health and Safety
•    ISO/IEC 27001 Information Security
•    PAS 55 Asset Management

In addition other international, regional, national or industry standards and specifications can be integrated using the same approach.
PAS 99-1:2006 Integrated Management
The Publicly Available Specification was developed by the British Standards Institute (BSI) in partnership with BSI management Systems. It is not a British Standard.
The PAS specifies common management system requirements and can be used as a framework for integrating two or more management system standards or specifications. It does this by bringing together the requirements from management system standards or specifications that are common.
In the same way as most of the standards the PAS is structured using a Plan, Do, Check, Act (PDCA) approach. It puts the common elements into a logical set of requirements which are grouped into 6 categories:

Key requirements of PAS 99
•    Policy
•    Planning
•    Implementation and operation
•    Performance assessment
•    Improvement
•    Management review

The PAS recognises that each management system standard has its own specific requirements, but these 6 elements will be contained in all of them and make an effective model for integration.

The course covers the PAS 99 principles, structure and requirements and develops the understanding and skills of the participants to apply these to a risk/aspects based internal audit process.
