About this standard
OHSAS 18001:2007 specifies requirements for an occupational health and safety (OH&S) management system to enable an organisation to control its OH&S risks and improve its performance. It has the status of a British Standard.
The organisation’s top management must authorise an OH&S policy including objectives and a commitment to improve OH&S performance. The organisation has to identify and manage risks, taking into account legal and other requirements. It has to establish a management programme to achieve the objectives. The organisation must implement, maintain and improve an OH&S management system in accordance with the requirements. By doing this, it will be able to manage the occupational health and safety risks of its activities and improve its performance. Customers, clients, shareholders and employees increasingly value tangible commitment to effective health and safety management.
